Other notes
Approximate milk requirements in infants for growth (common figures used when I was on my F1 Paeds rotation, but also found here on the NHMRC guidelines)
From 0-3 months: 150-180 mL/kg/day, usually ÷ into every 2-3 hours
3-6 months: 120 mL/kg/day
6-12 months: 90-100 mL/kg/day (or less, depending on how well weaning is going)
Feeding in sick infants / children
When children are sick (eg bronchiolitis) and find it more difficult to drink, “maintenance” would be around half to two-thirds (depending on which consultant you ask). Children <6 months old are obligate nasal breathers – if unwell with URTIs/LRTIs, they often struggle to breathe and drink at the same time.
If unwell infants are not not meeting requirements (drinking less than the required amount, producing less wet nappies, etc), they may require supplementation via NG tubes (if they are young enough not to pull out their NG tube) or hydration via IV fluids.
