Raw files

Some instructions

Draw.io

  • Free software, fairly easy to learn to use

  • Without this I doubt you’d be able to open the files

What each file contains

  • Each tab contains one page

  • Formatting has to be done manually (quite tedious)

  • List of topics for each page found in contents (separate file)

  • Generally each topic covers the definition (D), risk factors (R), aetiology (A; causes), pathophysiology (P), signs & symptoms (S/smx), investigations (Ix), management (Mx) and prognosis (P) ± complications

Layers

  • Most files have two layers – the background (which is usually locked and invisible) and the contents layer (probably ‘untitled’). To see the layers you can click Cmd+Shift+L.

  • Due to printing issues (i.e., on having to upload the file to Amazon to print), the background layer tells me the margins I have to work with. If you intend to print your notes (eg sending to a printer to print and bind), this may be helpful for you. Otherwise you can ignore this.

Content formatting

  • The size of each page is 1205 x 856 pixels. This size was decided on due to printing issues. You can resize this, although I don’t see any particular benefit to doing so as it will probably just make formatting a nightmare.

  • The column width is usually 190 pixels, and the space between columns is 30 pixels. I’ve found that this allows me to have 5 columns in each page.

  • Under the format panel (on the right hand) > text > spacing, you can control the spacing for the columns (i.e. how close the text goes to the margin of each box). I have opted for 4pt global and -7pt top as what I think works best.

  • Under the format panel > style, you can control the fill and line for each textbox. This is how I’ve colour-coded the content (the colours in the book were not chosen specifically, just to make things less boring).

  • Diagrams in the pages have either been hand-drawn by myself or obtained from royalty-free sources.

  • Where topics/pages have been updated recently, the update date is written on the top or bottom right corner.

  • A quick summary of topics is found on either the top or bottom of each page, along with the chapter tab.

  • Fonts

    • General content: Helvetica, font size 10px

    • Headers: Helvetica, 11px

    • Page header/footer: Calluna Sans, 11px

In exchange for these free raw files, please let me mope for a bit. I feel strangely sad about releasing these raw files, it’s really like letting go of a baby that I’ve nurtured over the last 4 years.

In an ideal scenario I’d have loved to have a team that would be able to work on these notes with me. But I don’t have anything to offer anyone else who would want to work on these notes – it’s a bit of thankless (and penniless) job.. I can’t even offer recognition like publishing in a journal or more renowned website might. Maybe one day I’ll be able to create a forum for people who have the same heart as I do to upload their versions of free notes on this website. I suppose the caveat will always be that these are not proof-read (as professional textbooks or websites are), but even so, they might be better than nothing for some people.

Anyway, if you have come here for the raw files, or have found my notes otherwise useful, I hope you “pass along” this kindness. I’m not asking you to share this website with someone else, but rather just to be kind because it is right. All the best :)
