10.01 Haematological cancers [PDF link]: Acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL), Chronic lymphoblastic leukaemia (CLL), Hairy cell leukaemia. Acute myeloblastic leukaemia (AML), Chronic myeloblastic leukaemia (CML). Myelofibrosis, Myelodysplastic syndrome. Polycythaemia vera rubra, relative polycythaemia.
Investigations for diagnosis of different blood cancers
ALL: bone marrow biopsy
AML: bone marrow biopsy (showing myeloblasts)
CLL: immunophenotyping (i.e., flow cytometry)
Immnophenotyping is done via flow cytometry (purple EDTA top blood, request flow cytometry)
CML: FISH/PCR to look for BCR-ABL (aka Philadelphia) mutation
Other extremely niche stuff for MRCP
CML vs myelofibrosis: Leucocyte alkaline phosphatase is low in CML but raised in myelofibrosis
